Wyche Consulting has extensive experience in the design of civil engineering structures, including items like retaining walls, foundation systems and support plinths. We have designed numerous permanent and temporary structures in prestressed and reinforced concrete, steel, timber and FRP.
In particular we are known for our innovation and expertise in bridge engineering. This includes single and multi-span concrete, steel and composite bridges using a variety of construction methods, including T-roffs, launched bridges, pre-cast plank bridges and steel or steel and concrete composite girders. We have also designed various forms of piled or shallow bridge foundations.
In addition, we provide all of the associated temporary works design needed to construct and maintain various types of structures, especially bridges. We are experts in launch design involving casting beds and formwork, launch girders, side guides, temporary and permanent bearings and bearing change-over. We have also done a variety of other construction engineering designs such as timber pile replacement, reo cage lifts, steel formwork for complex high lift pours, retaining and sound walls, scaffolding, jacking and lifting certifications.
Because Wyche Consulting specialises in all aspects of structural bridge design, and similar types of civil structural engineering, we are adept at taking into account construction methodology with full consideration of safety right from the concept design stage, so our clients find that involving us early is a key driver for success in this type of project.
With this background, experience and industry recognition, Wyche Consulting has also received a number of briefs to act as an expert consultant in legal cases, generally to interpret and explain technical aspects of the case, and to advise how a “reasonable” engineering performance might compare with the particular case.
Our objective is to do the whole job properly and well.
Wyche Consulting was founded in 2001 by Joe Wyche. From the beginning our philosophy has been to supplement other organizations in the specialized area of bridge and civil structural design, instead of directly competing with them. Wyche Consulting’s client list includes several other firms which have considerable expertise on their own, but for whom Wyche Consulting can provide complementary or supplementary skills. Wyche Consulting has also carried out direct design briefs for clients varying from government departments such as Main Roads, PTA and DBCA to builders such as SRG, CPB Contractors, Laing O’Rourke, Thiess and Fortec.
There are a number of differences between our approach and more traditional firms, which we believe not only make us more effective for our clients but also provide a more enjoyable and fulfilling career for our own people:
Small firm – high expertise. We have always deliberately limited the size of the firm to a maximum of four people to ensure that there is a high degree of contact and awareness between our colleagues, to ensure skills are developed, and to maintain our ability to work as a highly integrated team.
Flexible efficient methodology. We are prepared to vary our work methods to suit other clients and evolving technology. For example our engineers all constantly use CAD drafting for tasks ranging from pure design to preparing information for drafters, or even to directly draft final drawings. Each of our engineers has a laptop with our software installed, so that he or she can relocate instantly to a client’s premises, or operate in our own premises on our local network.
Software. Most of our software has been developed in house, which not only develops personal skills and ensures that it gives correct results, but also means that it can be tailored as required for the needs of any particular project. Our software is largely the key to our efficiency, consistency of approach, and design accuracy, and we have always been prepared to make it available to our clients as we work within their teams.
The structure of the firm naturally limits its people to a small number who develop a high level of skills and work as a closely integrated group. Our skill and experience base is built around the firm’s founding Director, Joe Wyche, who has over forty years of experience in bridge and civil structural engineering for projects ranging from management of aging timber bridge infrastructure through to designing large bridges for D&C contracts. Operations commenced in September 2001 with Joe as a sole practitioner. Caroline Morrell had several years in the construction industry before joining the firm in 2008, taking advantage of our flexible working arrangements to continue her career in parallel with her family life with young children. She progressed steadily as a designer and drafter under our system of mentoring and training, gaining practical experience in a wide variety of projects, so much so that by 2016 she had developed the skills, experience and confidence to take over as Director. Joe remains closely associated with the firm as its ongoing Senior Consultant.
